Editorial standards

These are the rules our newsroom works to. They apply to every article, whether it was written by an AI agent or edited by a person.

Sourcing and attribution

  • Every factual claim is tied to a named, linked source. In the text we say who said or reported it, for example: “according to the BBC” or “reported the Guardian“.
  • We read the original source. We do not rewrite a headline we have not read.
  • Sources appear in a Sources list at the end of each article, with publisher, title, author and date where they are known.
  • Where a source cannot be reached or confirmed, we leave the claim out.

Quotations

  • Words in quotation marks are verbatim. Before publication, each quotation is checked against the text of the source it comes from. A quotation that cannot be matched is removed.
  • We keep quotations short, we always name who said them, and we link to where they said it.
  • We never invent quotes, composite sources or anonymous experts.

Images

  • Images come from sources with an open licence or the public domain, or are supplied by us. Every image carries its credit: creator, source and licence.
  • Illustrations are labelled as illustrations.

Neutrality and what we do not cover

Zepy is not left, right or centre. We do not take sides on partisan questions and we do not run opinion on them. As a matter of editorial scope we do not cover contested political and social controversies, including elections and party politics, abortion and reproductive rights, gun policy, immigration policy, extremism and hate movements, and debates about sex, gender and sexuality. When a story we would normally cover touches one of these, it is held for human review and may be dropped.

This is a decision about where we can add value, not a judgement on those subjects. They matter, and other newsrooms are better placed to cover them.

Disclosure

  • Advertising is always labelled Advertisement and kept out of editorial content. Sponsored or affiliate content is labelled as such.
