Champions League 2026-27: how the league phase works
Thirty-six clubs, one table and eight matches each: how the format works and where clubs stand after three matchdays, according to NBC Sports' table of 21 October.

Five clubs are on nine points after three matchdays of the 2026-27 Champions League league phase, according to a table published by NBC Sports on 21 October 2026.[1] Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa lead on a goal difference of +9 each. Liverpool and Real Madrid (both +5) and Real Betis (+3) complete the group, all with three wins from three.[1]
A caution first. Matchday 3 was scheduled for 20-21 October, and the NBC table was published on the second of those days.[2][1] The full standings should be checked against UEFA’s official table.
One table, eight opponents
The league phase has replaced the traditional group stage. Sports Illustrated explains that all 36 clubs sit in a single league table and each plays eight matches.[2] According to the same report, every club meets two opponents from each of four pots, once at home and once away.[2] The pots are set by UEFA club coefficient rankings, which are based on performances over the past five seasons.[2]
SI lists three ground rules for the draw:[2]
- two clubs from the same nation cannot meet in the league phase;
- no club can play more than two matches against teams from the same country;
- no specific fixture can be staged three years in a row, although it can be reversed.
NBC Sports describes the competition as being in its third season in this format.[1]
What the table decides
The table is split into three bands, as both NBC Sports and SI describe it.[1][2]
- First to eighth: these clubs go straight to the last 16 as seeded teams.[1]
- Ninth to 24th: these clubs are paired for home-and-away playoff ties, which fill the other eight places in the knockout rounds.[1]
- 25th to 36th: these clubs are out of all European competition for the rest of the season.[1]
SI notes that eliminated clubs do not drop into the Europa League, as they did under the old group stage.[2]
Who is in
UEFA says 29 clubs qualified directly for the league phase and the other seven came through qualifying, which ended on 26 August.[3] Among them were AEK Athens, Viking, Sabah, Fenerbahçe, Bodø/Glimt, Slovan Bratislava and LASK, whose play-off ties UEFA lists as won.[3]
PSG are the defending champions after beating Arsenal in the 2025-26 final, according to SI.[2] NBC Sports calls them two-time defending champions and says they are chasing the first men’s European Cup threepeat since Real Madrid in 2017-18.[1] It names Barcelona and Real Madrid among the sides labelled favourites, with Bayern Munich and Arsenal also expected to do well.[1]
There are five Premier League clubs: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.[1] SI says United and Villa return after missing the 2025-26 edition.[2] It also lists Como, LASK, Viking and Sabah as making their first appearances in the competition.[2]
The picture after three matchdays
Behind the five clubs on nine points, NBC’s table has Stuttgart and Arsenal on seven.[1] Barcelona, Como, Manchester City, Sporting CP and Borussia Dortmund are on six.[1] Bayern Munich have five points from one win and two draws.[1]
Further down, Manchester United and Inter Milan are on three points each, both with a goal difference of -1.[1] Porto, Lille and Slovan Bratislava have no points. Slovan have the worst goal difference in the table at -12.[1]
One line in the table does not add up. It shows Club Brugge with a record of two wins and one defeat but only three points, so their position should be confirmed with UEFA.[1]
What remains
With eight matchdays in all, five remain after this round, according to SI’s schedule.[2]
- Matchday 4: 3-4 November
- Matchday 5: 24-25 November
- Matchday 6: 8-9 December
- Matchday 7: 19-20 January 2027
- Matchday 8: 27 January 2027[2]
The league phase ends on 27 January 2027.[2] The final will be played on 5 June 2027 at Atlético Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.[2]
